“Some scratches go pretty deep,” Sam murmured.

“The rest of the car’s pretty beat up anyway, so it's not worth the effort of fixing it,” Rory said, still caressing him through the threadbare cotton shirt. He didn't ask her to remove her hand--

his heart just beat faster.

“How does it run?”

“Like a charm.”

“Then it’s worth it, because dressing the window just helps convince people of what’s inside.”

Rory's skin heated under his stare. Sam didn’t speak, just rested his fingers lightly on her battered car’s new scar. It felt as if he was touching her intimately, holding his hand over the pulse point in her throat, over her heart. Over her breasts and her sex and all the sensitized nerve endings in between.

“I can fix this for you.”

God, just the whisker-rasp of his voice made her melt.

Sam checked out her earrings, decided the giant silver triangles definitely qualified as big. She’d left out that her eyes were the color of storm clouds and that her cheeks had the rosy glow of a skin care commercial.

So he’d finally met Rory Fowler. She’d sucker-punched him twice now. First with her voice, now with her everything.

He wrenched open his car door without sparing her another glance and said, “Follow me.”

What an insane question. He’d never be free again, not completely. And here he was asking a total stranger if she happened to be something that sounded so impossibly wonderful that his breath stumbled. What he wouldn’t give for freedom or to forget, just for a little while. Maybe, just maybe, she could give him that.
